1374353 Monocyanoethylated butanone; 5- oxoheptanenitrile; Schiffs bases; (cyanoethyl)- isopropylamine STAMICARBON NV 18 Feb 1972 [19 Fob 1971] 7744/72 Heading C2C α-Monocyanoethylated butanones and 5-oxoheptanenitrile are prepared by reacting in the liquid phase acrylonitrile with at least an equimolecular proportion of butanone in the presence of an acid or of an acid compound and of a Schiff's base having a boiling point less than 150‹ C., and which is derived from butanone and an aliphatic primary amine. The Schiff's base, e.g. that from isopropylamine or sec-butylamine may be formed in situ, in the former case (cyanoethyl)isopropylamine being formed as a byproduct.
