Abstract

1373974 Photo-electric sorting apparatus AMF Inc 29 Feb 1972 [20 May 1971] 9234/72 Heading G1A In sorting apparatus, particularly suitable for tobacco leaves, the leaves are arranged into single file streams before being propelled in a ballistic path above a coloured background plate 26 having a reference colour against which the leaves are compared by photo-electric means 28 which controls ejection means if the leaves are not of the required colour. Leaves are conveyed on belt 10 and an adjustable proportion diverted by paddle wheel 12 from falling on to belt 14. The falling stream is divided into four streams by apparatus including rollers 90, 92 (two oppositely rotating rollers), baffles 96, 98, rollers 118-124 and baffles 100-104. Belt 22 conveys the leaves to the photo-electric sorting station. An air jet 30 is used to eject unacceptable leaves to reject conveyer 226 (or chute). The photo-electric sorting arrangement is described and claimed in Specification 1373975. The flow dividing means is described and claimed in Specification 1373977.
