Abstract

1373936 Ignition systems, timing ignition ELTRA CORP 24 Nov 1971 [22 March 1971] 54628/71 Heading FIB An ignition system comprises a generation and control device incorporating a rotor 10 and a stator 30, means for driving the rotor in synchronism with the engine, a magnet 14 mounted on the rotor and including pole shoes 16, 18, a charging coil 32 mounted on the stator with the ends 32b 32c of the magnetic core 32a of the charging coil positioned for excitation by the pole shoes, means D1 for charging a capacitor CD from the charging coil, a trigger coil 34 mounted on the stator with one end of the trigger coil positioned for excitation by the pole shoes in advance of the excitation of the charging coil core the trigger coil being spaced from the leading end of the charging coil core by a distance less than the width of the leading pole shoe whereby a single positive voltage pulse having spaced peaks of different voltage values is generated in the trigger coil when the pole shoes are rotated past the trigger coil core, the lower voltage peak being first in time and below a predetermined level lower than the higher voltage peak during starting of the engine and above the predetermined level after the engine has started and means responsive to such positive pulse exceeding the predetermined level for triggering a controlled rectifier SCR for discharging the capacitor. The system may include means for preventing charging of the capacitor when the rotor is rotating in a reverse direction. The trigger coil control circuit may include temperature compensating means comprising a thermistor R5 and a voltage divider. In Fig. 7 (not shown) an alternative method of temperature compensation is provided.
