1373807 Photo-electric absorption analysis INSINOORITOIMISTO DATEX OY 25 Oct 1971 [4 Nov 1970] 49404/71 Heading G1A In a method of examining a material in which a radiation beam R that has passed through or been back-scattered from the material is divided and at least some of the resulting beams are filtered, one of the filtered beams, e.g. Rb, contains a wavelength which interacts with a component of the material whose concentration is to be measured. As shown two components a and b of the material are determined simultaneously. Filters Fa, Fb remove the wavelengths # a , # b which interact with the components a and b respectively. Hence the respective outputs from photo-cells D1 and D2 are proportional to the concentrations of b and a respectively in the material. Beam RR, from which both # a and # b have been removed, provides a reference output from photo-cell D3. Other filters (F) Fig. 6 (not shown) may be placed in the undivided beam R to exclude unwanted wavelengths. Using infrared radiation from an incandescent lamp source and PbS photo-resistors as detectors, the water content in a paper web may be continuously monitored and the production of the web may be guided and controlled accordingly. Tubes having reflective inner surfaces may be used to conduct radiation from the material to the detectors.
