Abstract

1373493 Reactors BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 7 Jan 1972 [7 Jan 1971] 897/71 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor comprises a core which includes a plurality of parallel graphite columns, a ring of those of the columns which are disposed at or near the periphery of the core containing inclusions of neutron-absorbent material and constituting a thermal shield. In the embodiment described, the two outer rings of columns do not contain fuel material and constitute a reflector which surrounds the fuelled columns. Each of the outer ring of columns 14 is formed with a double ring of absorber-accommodating channels 18 (only one of which is shown in the Fig. 3 section) within which are annular compacts 20 of neutron absorbent material, e.g. sintered boron carbide. Annular graphite inserts 22 are disposed within the compacts 20 to define coolant channels 24. Additionally, each column 14 is formed with a central coolant duct 26. At the top of each column 14 the coolant channels 24 and the coolant duct 26 are interconnected by a cap 30, while at the bottom a manifold 32 is provided which defines, with the lowermost block of the column 14, a coolant inlet port 34 for each of the channels 24, and which also defines a coolant outlet port 36 for the duct 26. A small proportion of the coolant gas is fed downwardly between the core and the pressure vessel lining and then passes via the ports 34 into the channels 24 through which it flows upwardly before being directed into the duct 26 through which it flows downwardly to emerge via the port 36 and mingle with heated gas from the bottoms of the fuelled columns.
