Abstract

1373347 4-Triazenoimidazoles BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 12 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 45309/71 Heading C2C Novel 4-triazenoimidazoles of the general formula wherein R 1 is an optionally substituted methyl or thiol group, R 2 is an amino or substituted hydroxyl group, R 3 is a methyl or (3-chloroethyl group, R 4 is an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group and R 5 is a hydrogen atom, and salts, tautomers and solvates thereof are prepared by reacting an amine of the general formula HNR 3 R 4 with a diazo compound of the general formula wherein R 8 is a negative charge (obtained by reacting compounds of the general formulae R 2 COCH(NH 2 )CN and C 6 H 5 CH 2 S(R 1 )C=NH.- HCl and treating the resulting amine of the general formula or an acid addition salt thereof with nitrous acid or with a nitrite salt or ester and an acid capable of liberating nitrous acid therefrom). Pharmaceutical compositions having antitumour, antifungal and antibacterial activity comprise, as active ingredient, a 4-triazenoimidazole of the first general formula above or a salt, tautomer or solvate thereof, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
