Abstract

1372880 Swimming pool skimmers G ERLICH 13 Oct 1971 [13 Oct 1970] 18230/74 Heading A4N A skimmer apparatus for an above ground lined swimming pool comprises a tank 1 fixed to the outerside of the wall 35 of the swimming pool and a corresponding face plate 32 fixed to the inner-side of the wall and joined to the tank by bolts 33 extending through the wall 35. Tank 1 is in communication with the pool by a water surface-level passageway 2 in which is mounted a weir-type skimmer. The skimmer comprises a flat plate 8 one side of which is covered with floatable material 13 to bias the plate towards the water surface 4. A bottom edge of the plate is pivoted on a horizontal axis 11. The plate pivots as the water level 4 rises and falls to maintain a level 10 in the housing 1. If the water level falls below the bottom of passage 2 then the weir-plate seals against shoulders 21 and prevents air being sucked through the inlet. Mounted downstream of the weir is filter basket 6 and outlet 3 for filtered water leads via a pump to a return pipe 34 which empties into the swimming pool. A direct by-pass line 7 is provided to enable water circulation when weir-plate 8 is in the closed position. Check valve 18 in line 7 opens at a predetermined pressure differential. The flow from line 17 may enter housing 1 through the side of the filter basket or upstream of the basket Fig.5 (not shown). Line 7 is designed to receive the end of a pool vacuum cleaning hose. The face plate 32 has the by-pass line 17 formed integrally therein and also provides mounting for a light 31. The face plate is separated from the pool wall by a vinyl pool liner (3, 7), Fig.4 (not shown) and the tank 1 is separated from the pool wall by a gasket (39).
