Abstract

1372411 Mechanical switches JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [5 March 1971] 6217/71 Heading H1N A switch comprises a rotor 13 carrying a roller moving contact 16 resiliently urged to bridge two fixed contacts 18, 19 each rectangular in cross-section and having a surface 18a, 19a in the path of movement of roller 16, one edge 18b, 19b of surface 18a, 19a on at least one fixed contact 18, 19 being inclined at an acute angle to a line 29 extending radially from the pivot axis 28 of rotor 13 through the contact 18, 19 so that the portion of the roller surface which engages surface 18a, 19a moves axially along roller 16 as roller 16 is moved angularly over surface 18a, 19a. The switch is intended as a direction indicator switch of a road vehicle, for mounting on the steering column, with a striker 25 hitting cancelling arms 26. Two switches are mounted on rotor 13 in bores 15 and in one position of lever 21 no switches are made in a second position one switch is made and in a third position the other switch is made, detent means (not shown) maintaining rotor 13 in each position. Lever 21 may also be movable in another plane to operate a further set of contacts 27, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the axis of rotation of each roller 16 is inclined at an acute angle to an imaginary line 31 passing through axis 28 and the centre of gravity 32 of roller 16 so that during angular movement of roller 16 over contacts 18, 19, the frictional force between roller 16 and contacts 18, 19 causes the surface of roller 16 to slide as well as rotate to clean contacts 18, 19.
