Abstract

1372287 Pulverized cobalt compound BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 13 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 27547/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] In a process for the production of a pulverized compound of Co and one or more rare earth metals, for use in magnets having a high coercive force, Co powder 1 and scraps 2 of rare earth metal, e.g. Sm are placed in a tantalum ampoule 3 with a transport agent, e.g. iodine, and grinding weights 4 of Mo, Ta or W. The ampoule 3 is evacuated, sealed inside a quartz ampoule 5, placed in an oven at 750-1150‹ C. and rotated at 10-500 r.p.m. After reaction the iodides are washed out of the product leaving Co5Sm particles of 1-5 microns size and having a coercive force of 20,000 oersteds. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) no transport agent is used and the Sm and the Co and grinding weights are in separate compartments communicating so that Sm vapour can react with Co. Other rare earth metals can be alloyed with Co, one example of a product being CeMM0À5Sm0À5Co where MM denotes misch metal.
