Abstract

1372244 Load handling MULLARD Ltd 2 Nov 1971 50797/71 Heading B8H [Also in Divisions H1 H2 and H3] A magnetic holding device 1, e.g. for lifting loads comprises strontium ferrite permanent magnets 2 interposed between mild steel plate poles 3, 4, 5, 6; a control winding 7 surrounding the upper parts of poles 4, 5 and stainless steel members with stops 9 being secured to poles 3, 6 to limit movement of a mild steel keeper to and from the pole faces. The keeper has a central lifting eye 11, and non-magnetic headed spacer rods 12 extend from the upper face of the keeper for a distance equal to the length of the poles 3, 4, 5, 6, + a maximum operating airgap, and are a sliding fit in bores of poles 3, 6. A non-magnetic control rod 14 with stop 15 at upper end slides in bore 16 of pole 4, and operates a monopole microswitch S1 and bipole changeover switch S2 (not shown) mounted on top of keeper 10, so that S2 operates before S1; whenever load 17 and keeper 10 are at a critical separation exceeding the length of spacers 12. On lowering the device to a floor to lift or release a load, capacitor C (Fig. 2) previously charged from battery 19 is switched to discharge into base of transistor 20 which conducts batteries 18, 19 to pulse winding 7, so that the magnet switches from a first to a second condition in which the attraction between poles and load is increased and that between poles and keeper is decreased. The keeper plate 10 is released and lifted by spacing rods 12 abutting the load, and after the energizing pulse the magnet flux threads and retains load 17. On lifting, S 1 recharges the capacitor and S 2 remains closed; the keeper bearing on stops 9. On again lowering, the keeper plate 10 is released towards the upper poles, S 2 reverses the connections to winding 7, and S 1 discharges C to reverse the magnetic circuit condition, so that the pole-keeper attraction exceeds the pole-load attraction, and the spacer rods slidably displace the load so that the holding device may be lifted clear (Figs. 3-7, not shown). A graph (Fig. 8, not shown) gives the relationships between load and non-magnetic gap between poles and load, and constructional constants are quoted.
