Abstract

1371953 Coat polyvinyl chloride articles AJINOMOTO CO Inc 10 May 1972 [11 May 1971], 21958/72 Heading B1E The surface of a plasticised polyvinyl chloride article is primed with a coating of a solution in an organic solvent of a polyurethane elastomer having cyclohexyl radicals in the polyurethane molecules, and then topcoated with a resin composition comprising a poly-α-amino acid. In Examples the product is simulated leather. The substrate may be prepared from granular or other rsin compositions by calendering, moulding or extrusion, may be p.v.c. impregnated fabric and may be foamed. The polyurethane elastomer is made by first making a.prepolymer by reacting a diisocyanate compound having a cyclohexyl radical with a macromolecular compound (such as a polyester, polyether, polyamide or polyolefin) having terminal functional groups containing active hydrogen (such as hydroxyl, primary or secondary amino, thiol or carboxyl). The prepolymer is then chain extended using an agent such as hydrazine, ethylene diamine, ethylene glycol or other active hydrogen bearing compounds. Many examples of diisocyanates are listed. Application of the polyurethane solution may be by brushing, spraying, gravure coating, roller coating or dipping, then drying. The poly-α-amino-acid may be applied from solution by brushing, spraying, gravure, roll, dip or knife coating, and many examples of the acids are listed. The amino acid solution may include other elastomeric polymers such as polybutene, natural rubber, polychloroprene, acrylonatrile-butadiene, copolymer, polybutadiene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, or urethane prepolymers.
