Abstract

1371690 Making fragmentation projectiles WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON-BUHRLE AG 5 July 1972 [8 July 1971] 31331/72 Headings B3A and B3Q [Also in Division F3] A method of making a shell having a thinwalled cylindrical sleeve 5, a cylindrical expiosive charge container 7 arranged co-axially therein and a plurality of equal sized spherical projectiles 9 located between the sleeve and container, comprises inserting the container into the sleeve to form a compartment, filling the compartment with projectiles and generating a pressure in the container 7 so as to form bulged. portions 10, which secure the projectiles against displacement. A ring member 1 and the sleeve 5 are placed in a tubular support 19, which is mounted on a table 21 of a vibrator, and are held by a retaining screw 23. The container 7 is pushed over a tool 16, which comprises a plurality of elastomeric ring members separated by steel discs mounted on a rod between pistons 25, 31. The tool 16 and container 7 are inserted into the bottom of the support 19 and a quantity of projectiles 9 are placed in the container. The tool is moved upwardly as the table 21 is vibrated and the projectiles fill the space between the sleeve and container, which space is closed by a ring 6. A compressive load is applied to the pistons 25, 31, Fig. 6 (not shown) and the elastomeric members apply the pressure to the container. In an alternative embodiment, the elastomeric members are replaced by the explosive filling for the shell, which is compressed on the tool 16 to deform the container. The shell may also be assembled and then filled with a fluid, e.g. oil, which is pressured inside the container 7, Fig. 8 (not shown).
