Abstract

1371370 Preparing films for processing AGFA-GEVAERT A G 27 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 44942/71 Heading G2X In preparing, for processing, films contained in cartridges or cassettes having data carriers associated therewith, the cartridges are opened and the film removed, the films are joined together to form a continuous strip and the data is transferred on to the film. As shown, the cartridges 4 have a data-carrying section 4a attached thereto. The cartridges are fed along a table 3 until they reach a station 5 where the data-carrier 4a is cut off by a blade 6. The carrier falls on to a moving belt 8, while the cartridge passes on to a station 10 where it is broken open by a punch 11. The pieces of the cartridge fall into a chute 12, while the film is engaged, unrolled, and passed on to the splicing station 13. Strips of adhesive splicing tape 9 are carried on a band 14 through station 13, and successive strips of film are spliced together. At the same time the data-carrier 4a on belt 8 reaches station 13 and is joined on to one end of the film strip. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement for unrolling the film spool and separating the film from the backing paper. The spool 20 is held by mandrils 19 at the ends of arms 18, and engaged by a drive roller 21 having a high-friction surface. The beginning of the roll, which consists of backing paper, is guided by a tongue 25 to pass beneath it. The tongue is carried by a plate 27 having an aperture through which one arm 30a of a magnet armature 30 passes. When the leading end of the backing paper abuts against the arm 30a, it arches downwardly and engages against the feeler runner 26 of a switch 26a, but does not actuate the switch because of its pliability. As more and more backing paper is unrolled, it forms first a loop and then a roll 34. After a certain length of backing paper has been unwound, the leading edge of the film emerges, and is likewise guided until the edge abuts against arm 30a and arches downwards. Since the film is stiffer than the paper, when the arched film engages against feeler 26 the switch 26a is actuated. This energizes magnet.32, which lifts the armature 30 and hence arm 30a. The film is now free to move forwards and enters the guide channel 31. In an alternative arrangement the data may be exposed on to the film or stamped thereon. In this case the data is read off and marked on the film.
