Abstract
1371318 Coated optical fibre STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 29 March 1973 15095/73 Headings B5A and B5B [Also in Division G2] An optical communications fibre 6 comprising a glass optical fibre 1 and a coating of plastics resin is formed by drawing the optical fibre 1 through a sizing die 3 and the point and die of a cross-head extruder 5. The coated optical fibre 6 may be passed through an annealing oven 7 and a water cooling trough 8. The optical fibre 1 may be drawn directly from a glass fibre drawing apparatus or from a driven or free running spool 2. The die point may be of steel and include a replaceable sapphire insert. The speed of through-put of the optical fibre may be 5-50 metres/min. The plastics resin may be polyethylene terephthalate, polytetramethylene terephthalate, polypropylene or 1-4 cyclohexylene terephthalate/isophthalate copolymer. The diameter of the optical fibre may be 50-100 microns and the diameter of the coated optical fibre may be 1 mm. The melt temperature may be 275 C.
