Abstract

1371018 Suction cleaners ELECTROLUX Ltd 20 June 1973 [3 July 1972] 29198/73 Heading A4F A vacuum cleaner incoporates an agitator 17 mounted adjacent a suction inlet 25 and driven about a horizontal axis by a motor 19, the agitator being journalled at its ends in members 38 which are urged by springs 39a, 39b vertically downwards to urge the agitator against a surface such as a carpet being cleaned. The agitator thus automatically adjusts in height according to the nap height of the carpet and according to the load on the motor. The agitator comprises an outer sleeve 29 provided with helical rows of bristles 18 and an inner sleeve 30. Stub shafts 32 at each end of the inner sleeve 30 are mounted in bearings 34 in the members 38,the members 38 being retained in pockets 42 in the body of the cleaner. The motor 19 drives a centrifugal fan 21 which draws in air through inlet 25 and discharges the air and entrained dust through outlet 26. The motor 19 also drives the agitator 17 via an endless belt 22 and, to maintain the belt 22 taut, springs 53 are provided urging the agitator in a forward direction.
