Abstract

1370884 Current collection in dynamo-electric machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 25 Nov 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 40891/70 Heading H2A A dynamo-electric machine hasahollowrotorin which are disposed stationary current collecting members 18, 19 co-operating with current collecting surfaces of the rotor, the rotor containing a quantity of mercury such that when the rotor rotates the mercury bridges the gaps between the current collecting members and surfaces. The stator of the homopolar machine shown comprises a pair of superconducting coils 2, 3 and an internal magnetic core 11 supported by concentric, insulated bus-bars 5, 6. The rotor structure comprises a support cylinder 9 which surrounds the internal core 11 and which is made of magnetic material (except for portions 12 beneath the coils 2, 3). closed at both ends by non-magnetic discs 7 and mounted in bearings 1.0. Within the support cylinder are arranged a cylindrical rotor conductor 4 and magnetic (14) and non-magnetic (15) spacing rings, the rings 15 being separated from the ends of the rotor conductor 4 by a small gap to form annular grooves 13 into which project stationary conductive annular ribs 18, 19 connected to respective busbars 5, 6. Mercury contained within the rotor spreads into the grooves when the rotor rotates. Surfaces within the rotor not included in the current collection system are insulated by epoxy resin or sprayed ceramic.
