1360792 Superconducting electric machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 28 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 31708/70 Heading H2A In a dyanomo-electric machine, e.g. of homopolar type, comprising, coaxial with a rotor, at least two stationary superconducting coils, e.g. 2, 3 which carry currents in opposite senses to generate opposed magnetic fields outside the machine and are held in spaced relationship within an enclosing cryostat 1 by a support structure, the latter comprises a continuous ring, e.g. 6 coaxial with the coils and disposed in the region of a surface of zero net flux linkage to minimize eddy heating of the ring, and a plurality of ribs 8 disposed in planes containing the rotor axis and extending from the ring. The invention is concerned with screening the space around the machine from the very high fields generated by the field coil and, as shown, the main field coil 2 is screened by two coils 3, 4 supported by respective rings 6, 7 and ribs 10, 11, the coil 2 being located in a segmented hollow cylinder formed by arcuate plates 9 carried by the ribs 8. In other embodiments, the rings 6, 7 are instead L-shaped, and the field coil is subdivided into two axially spaced parts.
