Abstract

1370540 Heating devices utilizing exothermic chemical reactions B DOUGLAS 1 March 1972 9458/72 Heading F4X A device producing heat by an exothermic reaction between first and second reactants comprises a closed chamber containing the first reactant and containing also a frangible capsule in which is the second reactant, an actuator member being adapted on operation of the device, to rupture the capsule and bring the reactants together so generating heat which is transmitted to an article, food or beverage in a container such as 16 or 46 in thermal contact with the reaction chamber. Heat insulation (e.g. polystyrene foam 30 or 60) enables the device to be held in the hand. 15 or 45 denotes the heating chamber containing the first reactant, e.g. dry potassium hydroxide flakes. 20 or 50 denotes the frangible capsule, e.g. of glass, containing the second reactant, e.g. orthophosphoric acid. The drawings show the device when operative. In Fig. 3, the capsule rupturing means comprises a screw 27 which is used to deform a wall 12 of the reaction chamber until the capsule breaks. Walls 11 and 13 define an air space in which the air becomes heated by the reaction to promote heating of the contents of chamber 16. In Fig. 6 the capsule rupturing means comprises a lever pivoted at 53 the capsule being fractured on pulling the lever arm 55 away from its inoperative position against the container wall (Fig. 4).
