Abstract
1370422 Sonar systems SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Sept 1971 [30 June 1970] 31770/70 Heading H4D A sonar system includes an array of transducers in front of a spherical or cylindrical reflector such that each transducer receives acoustic energy via the reflector from different directions through a surveillance sector and wherein the radial distance of the transducers from the reflector is varied throughout the array. The varying distances d1-d230 of the transducers 1 from the reflector 2 focus the transducers at varying ranges. Thus in a side looking sonar (Fig. 2, not shown) the transducers are focused on points at increasing plan range on the sea-bed. The transmissions may be C.W. or pulsed, the energizing of the transducers may be simultaneous or sequential and at varying carrier frequency. Reflected signals are passed via individual channels 3, 7 to a display unit 8 comprising a row of gallium arsenide or neon indicators (Fig. 4) which are continuously scanned by a television camera. The display co-ordinates may be processed to provide a polar co-ordinate display. Alternatively the received signals may be processed digitally.
