Abstract

1370281 Extruded reinforced tube CREATORS Ltd 2 Sept 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 42030/70 Addition to 1281682 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A thermoplastic or elastomeric tube extruded from an annular die outlet comprise a wall of a first material, e.g. soft polyvinyl chloride, reinforced by partially or completely embedded and simultaneously extruded rings or circumferentially extending ribs of more rigid or stronger material, e.g. rigid polyvinylchloride, which have been incorporated into the first material upstream of the extrusion outlet. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, the first material is supplied by a first screw extruder to the extrusion passage 2, via a tangential inlet to an annular chamber 6 and a passage 4, and the second material is supplied from a second screw extruder, via a similar inlet 5a and chamber 5, and the annular outlet of a passage 3, the discharge from which is intermittently partially, or completely, obturated by a reciprocated sleeve 23. Intermittent complete obturation produces axially separated circumferential rings, Fig. 6 (not shown), of the second material embedded within the first material, and the rings may be of circular or elliptical section in the axial plane. Partial obduration produces circumferential ribs of the second material interconnected axially by circumferentially continuous webs thereof. Alternatively, the obdurating end of the sleeve 23 may be castellated to produce the reinforcement as an interconnected mesh of circumferentially and axially extending webs 53, 54, Fig. 7. The second material flows to the annular outlet of the passage 3 through the passages of a spider 21 supporting an inner die member 9 which, immediately at the outlet of passage 3, may be provided with a lip (not shown) to deflect the second material fully within the first material. An outer die member 10 defining the passage 2, is radially adjustable by screws 10a. In the Fig. 8 modification of the Fig. 1 embodiment, the sleeve acts to obdurate the passageway 4 from which the second material is discharged, with the first material being continuously discharged internally thereof from the passage 3. A reinforcement of the second material on the surface of the first material, may be completely embedded by a second layer of the first material extruded from a further passage in the die. The sleeve 23 of the Figs. 1 and 8 embodiment, is connected for its reciprocatory movement to a yoke 33, via yoke and sleeve flanges 35, 36 locating in grooves 39, 40 of a plurality of axially slidable bolts 37, the yoke 33 being pivotally mounted between a pair of arms 31 pivoted at 32 about the die at one end for reciprocatory displacement at their other ends by an eccentric (not shown). The extruded tube is drawn from the die by a traction device and cooled. The dies are electrically heated.
