Abstract
1369666 Sowing, fertilizing and soil working N CANTONE 10 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 42344/71 Headings A1B and AID A process for the cultivation of a new crop on a soil on which a previous crop has been harvested comprises, in immediate contiguous sequence, and in a single pass over the soil, the steps of:- (a) depositing fertilizer on the soil to be cultivated; (b) uniformly working the soil with powered rotary hoe tools to break, overturn and comminute the soil and concurrently working the fertilizer into the soil and distributing it through the sub-superficial layer thereof. (c) subsequently applying seed in any desired pattern onto the soil. A further amount of fertilizer and/or other chemicals such as herbicides and insecticides may be added to the soil after step (b) and before or after step (c). The hoes preferably work to a depth of 30-35 cms. An apparatus for carrying out the process is shown in Fig. 1-arranged for the sowing of maize-and in Fig. 2 for the sowing of wheat, the machine having interchangeable auxiliary frame 30 and 43 respectively connected to bracket 31. Device 20 includes a doubly compartmented tank, one compartment for liquid or solid fertilizer, which is fed to the ground pneumatically through tubes 21, 39 and 26 and the other for seeds. Fertilizer is also gravity fed from container 25 Fig. 1 and seeds are sown from seed tank 24 by means of a toothed wheel. Herbicide or insecticide is pumped by pump 28 from an auxiliary tank (not shown) of device 20 along tubes 29 and 27. Powered hoe assembly 13 at the lateral ends of which may be freely rotating discs, works the soil followed by a levetting accessory 22 comprising sheet metal strips. Roller 23 is mounted via pivoted arm 34 on spring loaded parallelogram linkage 32 as are tanks 24, 25. This is followed by a ridging device 35. For the sowing of wheat (see Fig. 2) the seeds are pneumatically fed from one compartment of device 20 along tube 40 and fertilizer along tube 21 as before. (For Figures see next page)
