Abstract

1369599 Supporting flexible elements/taking up slack R C PURDY 27 Oct 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 52108/70 Heading B8B An apparatus for supporting during paying out and pulling in, a plurality of service cables 16 extending from a station 10 to a machine 11, movable with an advancing or retracting coal face, comprises a first set of bogies 13 to the rear of the station 10 and roller mounted on an overhead track 12, a return drum 18 roller mounted on the track, and a second set of bogies 15 in advance of the station 10 and roller mounted on the track. The cables 16 extend rearwardly from the station 10 on the bogies 13, around the drum 18 and forwardly on the bogies 13, past a bogie stop 14 on the track between the two sets of bogies, and over the bogies 15 to the machine 11. A flexible chain 19 for limiting the spacing between adjacent bogies extends from the machine 11, is coupled to all the bogies of the first and second sets, and is anchored to the return drum frame 17. When the cables are to be payed out from the fully retracted position shown, a braking unit 20 is secured to the drum frame 17 to frictionally engage the track to maintain tension in the cables as they are drawn by the advancing machine 11. The bogies 13 begin to bunch up whereas the already bunched bogies 15 begin to part, the most advanced bogie 15 of the second set engaging a leaf spring spacer device 22 on the track whereby that bogie is arrested until the correct spacing determined by the chain 19 is reached, when the bogie is forced past the device 22. When the cables are to be retracted, a ram is attached to the return drum frame 17 to haul the drum 18 rearwardly in stages to reverse the paying out operation. The ram is coupled between the frame 17 and a catch member roller mounted on the track, and a series of leaf spring stop devices on the track are engageable by the catch member and a similar member on the frame 17 to facilitate the stepwise motion of the ram and frame along the track.
