Abstract
1369541 Cylinder locks E S ASHFORD 17 April 1973 [17 Jan 1972] 2147/72 Heading E2A A cylinder lock comprises a fixed plug 3 and a rotatable plug 2 mounted in a bore of a housing 1, each plug having an equal number of passages parallel with a distributed around the axis of the plug such that each passage in one plug are aligned with a corresponding passage of the other plug. A tumbler is provided in each of the aligned pairs of passages at least some 4, 5, 6 of the tumblers having two divisions while the remainder (if any) have only one. The arrangement is such that a key of appropriate configuration introduced into the lock will move the tumblers so that the "first" divisions of the tumblers be at the interface of the two plugs 2, 3 and the rotatable plug 2 can be turned. The at least some of the tumblers can thereafter be pushed an additional amount to bring the second division thereof to the interface of the two plugs thereby causing the operation of an electrical means. As shown the electrical means comprises a lamp 16 and photocell 15 arrangement, a photocell 15 being provided for each doubly divided tumbler. The arrangement is such that the photocells 15 normally receive a beam from the lamp 16 during the first mentioned operation of the lock but when the at least some tumblers are pushed the additional amount an extension 8 of each of the at least some tumblers cuts off the beam to its corresponding photocell 15. A spring loaded central return cylinder 10 is slidable in and rotatable with the plug 2. The cylinder 10 is urged inwardly of the plug 2 on introduction of the key and is withdrawable again by the key engaging the tumblers during this movement to move the same to their initial positions. The cylinder 10 also carries a pair of pins which co-operate, on rotation of the cylinder, with a cross pin of a shaft to, in turn, rotate the shaft and bring a cross hole thereof into alignment with the lamp and a further photocell to produce a master output signal (Figs. 3, 4, not shown).
