Abstract
136,950. Marcy, F. E. Feb. 5, 1919. Ball and like mills.-In rod mills of the kind in which there is a constant flow of material through the barrel, the discharge end being left open for the discharge of the material and the insertion and withdrawal of the rods, the walls of the barrel are provided with means for preventing the rods from being discharged; this means may be supplemented by providing a conical flange or a disk or guard at the discharge end, and by inclining the axis of the barrel towards the feed-end. In the mill shown in Fig. 1, the barrel 1 is provided with a feed-trunnion 6, and the discharge end enters a casing 21, which may be provided with a hinged door D. The barrel is supported by rollers A and a bearing y, and may be horizontal or be inclined towards the feed-end, in which case a thrust bearing 9 of the following character is provided. The bearing, adjustable on a base 10 by a screw 14 and secured by bolts, supports a hemispherical bearing-member 16 carrying one end of a shaft 8 which is formed with a ball a entering a socket in the trunnion 6. The shaft is formed with a thrust collar 8<11> which abuts on a ball ring 18. For retaining the rods 4 in the barrel, the liners 2 are formed with lifting-ribs 3, the ribs preferably being disposed helically, and the barrel being rotated in a direction to cause the feedends of the ribs to precede the discharge ends. In the upward movement of the ribs, the rods are released by the discharge ends before being released by the feed-ends, and are thus deflected towards the feed-end of the barrel. The discharge end of the barrel is provided with a guard such as a disk 23 which deflects and returns towards the feed-end of the barrel any rods that escape from the lifting-ribs. The disk may be of circular, square, or other shape, and be arranged at right-angles or inclined to the axis of the barrel. The guard may be stationary or rotatable. As shown, the disk 23 is carried by the door D of the casing and is arranged within a flange 20 for building up the pulp-line x. The material is discharged through an annular opening o between the bevelled rim t on the disk and the bevelled edge m<1> of the flange 20 and a liner 20<1>. The inclination of the opening o prevents the rods from working through the opening. The disk may be provided with a stem 25 which is inserted in a bracket 24 on the door D, access to the barrel being obtained by opening the door. In the mill shown in Fig. 12, a guard-disk is dispensed with, a conical flange 39 being provided for retaining the rods 4 in the mill and building up the pulpline x.
