Abstract

1369434 Thrust reverser DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 20 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 49987/70 Heading B7G A thrust reverser for a gas turbine jet propulsion engine 10 comprises a casing 11 provided with apertures 24, means movable between forward propulsion and reverse thrust positions for closing the apertures, at least one thrust reverser member 15 of substantially aerofoil shape having at least one surface provided with sound absorbing cavities 23 and pivotable between forward propulsion and reverse thrust positions, and power-operated means for moving the means for closing and the thrust reverser members. The power operated means is an hydraulic system, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which the means for closing, namely an axially movable sleeve 31, is moved by a ram (45) and the members 15 by a rack and pinion device (52) actuated by a ram (53). The members 15 are pivoted adjacent their centres of gravity on shafts 16 on radial struts 14 which also support an inner casing 12 and carry either a fixed annular vane 32 or an annular array of fixed vanes, whose surfaces form a continuation of those of the members 15 in the forward propulsion position and are provided with sound absorbing cavities 36. The casings 11, 12 may define the fan duct 13 of a ducted fan engine. (For Figures see next page.)
