Abstract
1276265 Thrust reversers ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 15 April 1970 17869/70 Heading B7G A fan cowl for a gas turbine ducted fan engine comprises upstream and downstream cowl portions 22, 26 joined by strut members 24, a translatable mid cowl portion 28 and a plurality of blocker flaps 32 which are enclosed by the cowl portions and exposed by translation of the mid cowl portion downstream. Mid cowl portion 28 is formed from two coaxial rings joined by members 30. Flaps 32 are pivotally mounted on strut members 24 at 36 and have a slotted flange 40 which can be engaged by a pin 38 on mid cowl portion 28. so that the flaps are pivoted to a position where they block fan duct 20 when cowl portion 28 is translated downstream by rams, solenoids, ball-screw and nut mechanisms or the like. With flaps 32 blocking the fan duct air is deflected radially through apertures 34 and may be further deflected to provide reverse thrust by vanes 44. Wires 48 wound on drums 46 which may be spring loaded or toothed and driven by racks on cowl portion 28 are provided to assist the pivotal movement of the flaps 32 into the cowl during upstream translation of cowl portion 28.
