Abstract

1,197,028. Thrust reverser. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd. 24 Oct., 1968, No. 50568/68. Addition to 1,116,190. Heading B7G. A thrust reverser for a jet engine 10 has an annular fluid flow duct 13 formed between a radially inner casing 20 and a radially outer casing 21a, 21b which is formed with a circumferential opening 23, and a wall member 25 movable helically from a position in which it blocks the opening 23 and allows the entire fluid flow through the duct to pass downstream, to a position in which the opening is uncovered, and obturating means 34 downstream of the opening, adapted to be operated synchronously with the wall member 25 by for example a ram 28 to change between a condition in which the obturator offers minimum interference with the through fluid and a position in which it blocks off the duct. The engine is a gas turbine front fan engine. The outer casing of the fan duct is divided into two portions 21a, 21b interconnected by struts 22 of aerofoil crosssection, which define the opening 23. The wall member 25 has rails 27 which co-operate with rollers 26 on the inner surface of the fixed body 24 of the outer casing. The obturating means, which are operated simultaneously with the wall member 25, comprise a circumferential row of aerofoil vanes 34 pivotally mounted on to link members 33 which pass through the mid-cord position thereof so that when the vanes are turned to cut off the airstream the gas forces on either side balance and the turning force required is low. In addition adjacent vanes are arranged to pivot in opposite angular senses, to eliminate any torque being put on the structure. Other kinds of flaps or even "clam-shell doors" may be used instead of the vanes described.
