Abstract

1368423 Lead recovery ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 2 Dec 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 42484/70 Heading C7B A method of recovering lead and other metals e. g. antimony from a metal-containing material comprises in supporting the material on the cathode of an electrolytic cell, immersing the cathode together with an anode in the electrolyte and passing an electric current between them to reduce the material to the metallic state. Scrap material 13 from a lead-acid storage batteries in the form of fragments, grains, powder or paste rests on a steel cathode tray 11 in a vessel 10. Rods 12 serve both for lifting the tray and as cathode leads. Dendritic growth is inhibited by a porous diaphragm 14 of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. A plastics lattice 16 supports the anodes 18 each of which has a connector 19 leading to a common terminal 20. The anodes 18 may be lead, lead-antimony, or titanium. The elctrolyte may be sodium hydroxide. The reduced metal is removed from the cathode and consolidated by pressure. The cathode may be a conveyer belt, the reduced metal being fed into consolidating rolls and then into a bath of lead alloy for melting.
