The elements flex during cutting so as to take up the clearance #, and the elements abut each other so as to increase the cutting force. The amount of deflection may be restricted by the use of stops (5) or (6) Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Gaps # may be filled with polyethylene. The cutting elements may be flexible plates, or flexible rods, which may be tipped by high speed cutting material, or by an abrasive material. In a modification, each cutting element is formed by an abrasive material faced with two flexible plates. A cutter for machining surfaces with deep recesses comprises three staggered groups of flexible cutting elements I, II and III, Fig. 11, all of which are secured together at their inner ends. In a further modification, the cutter of Fig. 12 comprises three groups of flexible cutting elements having cutting edges of lengths b 1 and b 2 , the elements being secured together at their inner ends. Any of the cutting elements may be corrugated along its length; such corrugations can be arranged parallel with the cutter axes and also normal thereto. The cutter of Fig. 15 has each cutting element 22 formed by two flexible corrugated plates separated by an abrasive material. The cutter of Fig. 20 has groups of flexible rods I-XIV forming the cutting elements. Other cutters are described, and the specification includes formulae for determining the length L of the cutting elements.
