Abstract
1367872 Cell with hydrogen fluoride electrolyte UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 11 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 27657/73 Heading H1B The electrolyte of a primary cell comprises a four molal solution of ammonium fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. The active material of the anode comprises cadmium or tin or a combination of the two metals and may be in form of a metal sheet or compressed metal powder which is sintered, the active material whether in sheet form or sintered powder form being bonded by pressure to a grid support of nickel, graphite or platinum. In the case where the anode comprises a combination of cadmium and tin in sheet form, the two sheets are placed side-by-side to abut each other along their opposed edges. In the case where the cadmium and tin are in powder form, the two powders may be mixed or the powders may be placed separately on two discrete portions of the grid. The cathode comprises mercuric fluoride as active material mixed with a filler consisting of graphite or silver, the active material and filler being in powder form and mixed and applied to a grid similar to the anode grid. A cell construction employing a plastics separator between the anode and cathode is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown). A number of cells mounted in a common casing may be supplied with electrolyte ejected under pressure from a cylinder by a piston energized by a gas generator initiated by a detonator, the battery, without electrolyte, having an indefinite storagelife (Fig. 3, not shown).
