Abstract
1367783 Milling; gauging IMPRESA BOCAMI DI GARIBALDO ATTILIO 21 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 43980/71 Headings B3K and B3B An apparatus for scarfing a workpiece 5 comprises a plurality of milling cutters 4 mounted in a staggered fashion on a frame 1 movable along lead. screws 2, a programming unit 3 which can be set in relation to the defects 5a on the workpiece to be eliminated, means 27 connecting the unit to the frame so as to make selected cutters act on the defects, and means for operating the cutters and for moving the frame. Lead screws 2 are driven by an electric motor 9 via a shaft 8 and bevel gearing 7. Each cutter 4 is mounted on a crank-shaft 11 and the cutters are rotated by an electric motor 18 via a shaft 17, bevel gears 15, 16, and spur gears 12, 13. The cutters overlap so that the whole of the workpieee upper surface is covered. Each cutter can be lifted or lowered independently by an hydraulic cylinder 21 and the working depth of each cutter is controlled by a block 23, Fig. 5, which actuates a valve 24 connected to cylinder 21 and also to a distributer valve 27, Fig. 4 (not shown). Programming unit 3 comprises a bench 29 having a plurality of blocks 31 arranged in rows and being adapted to be lowered by hydraulic cylinders or electromagnets which are operated by a keyboard 31. The layout of the blocks corresponds to the layout of a mesh grid 32. In operation, the defects 5a on the workpiece are marked, the grid 32 is rested on the workpiece, the buttons on keyboard 31 are operated corresponding to the particular squares on the grid, thus causing therequired blocks 30 to operate. The grid is removed, and frame 1 is moved along screws 2, and when a distributer valve 27 encounters a block 30 the cylinder 21 is actuated and the cutter 4 is brought into contact with the workpiece at a defect 5a, and material is removed, the depth of cut being determined by block 23. After completion of one face, the workpiece is turned over and a second face is machined. Conveyer means may be provided for supplying the workpieee. Hydraulic cylinders 21 may be replaced by electric or power means.
