1367406 Malt kiln MIAG MUHLENBAU UND INDUSTRIE GmbH 28 April 1972 [3 May 1971] 19960/72 Heading C6E [Also in Division F4] A device for germinating and drying malt has a central shaft 7 surrounded by a plurality of annular chambers 12 which communicate with the shaft and with the atmosphere each chamber being divided into two by a rack 13 which rotates about the shaft and is provided with means for loading and unloading malt therefrom and means for turning malt thereon: the shaft contains means 14, 18 for supplying drying air to the chambers, and there is a side shaft 22, outside the chambers, horizontally subdivided in the same way as the chambers, each subdivision containing means 33 for passing germinating air to the chambers and being also connected to the atmosphere: another side shaft contains means for driving the moving parts, and a further series of side shafts serve as air conducting shafts, being inter-connected with each other, with the germinating air shaft and with the upper and lower portions of the chambers, at least one of these shafts containing one or more movable barriers to permit flow of air through the chambers from each lower to each upper chamber. The means of communication between shafts may comprise aperture of variable cross section. Each subdivision of the germinating air shaft may be further subdivided horizontally by a partition which supports the means for producing the air current, and the subdivisions may be provided with connecting apertures to the upper and lower divisions of the chamber, and apertures to at least one air conducting shaft, there being air conditioners placed between the upper and lower subdivisions.
