Abstract
1367356 Barrel locks INGERSOLL LOCKS Ltd 21 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 35430/71 Heading E2A A key-operable barrel lock comprises a body 10, a detainer carrier 48 rotatable within the body and a plurality of detainer elements 64 carried by the carrie. Each element has a key-engaging surface and a notch 82, and a talon 92 is juxtaposed the carrier for rotation therewith, the talon being movable to engage the body, there being bias means acting on the detainer (elements) to bias them to a datum position whereby on insertion of an appropriate key and rotation of the same, the keyengaging surfaces are picked up to align the notches of the detainers to permit entry of the talon and whereby rotary motion of the key is transmitted to the talon through the detainer carrier. As shown, a cylindrical body 11, Fig. 1, has a bore 13 in which is received a rotatable lock cylinder 30 retained in the bore by a plug 32 and circlip 31; the body 11 includes a longitudinal blister 25, Fig. 2, having a cam surface 29 and the plug 32 carries guides 43 extending therefrom and having guide surfaces 47. The carrier 48 comprises a bridge 51 and discshaped members 49, 50, Figs. 5a, 5c, each provided with key-receiving openings 52 and cutaway portions to accommodate the guides 43 those portions permitting lost motion between the guides and plug 32 when the carrier 48 is rotated; the member 49 mounts a pin 62, Fig. 5d. The carrier 48 accommodates, between the members 49, 50, a plurality of detainers 64, Fig. 6, maintained in spaced, parallel relation by spacers 65, i.e. Bellville type washers, and having key-hole openings corresponding with those in the members 49, 50 and a series of key "pick-up" steps 75.. 78. A plate 91, of sintered carbide or other hardened material to prevent attack on the lock by drilling, has a key-hole 92 and a hole adjacent thereto for reception of the pin 62 on the member 48. The guides 43 slidably embrace the talon 92 of generally rectangular cross-section and projecting into the recess 26. Spring plates 96, 97, Fig. 3, having key-holes 99 and are secured against rotation with respect to the body 10 by projections 101 thereof engaging in the recess 26; each plate incorporates a slot 102 engaged by the pin 62 and accommodating a compression spring 102 acting against the pin. In operation, spring 102 biases pin 62 on member 49 of carrier 48 to abut the extremity of slot 102, Fig. 3, to define a datum position of the lock assembly, and at the same time, edge 200 of member 51 abuts radial edge 83 of each detainer 64 to maintain each of the latter in a corresponding datum position with shoulder 79 abutting adjacent talon guide 43, the talon 92 being maintained in a projected position and in the recess 26 by contact thereof with the edges 80 of the detainers. In this position, the keyholes in the plates 96, 97, 91, members 49, 50 of carier 48 and detainers 64 are aligned. Insertion of a key 104 into the mechanism and rotation, clockwise in Fig. 2, thereof produces movement of the carrier 48, due to coaction between bit portion 111 of the key and the portion 54 of key opening 52 in member 49 and plate 91, initial rotation of the key causing rotation of the carrier with respect to the detainers to remove the radial extremity of bridge 51 from abutting relation with edge 83 of each detainer. Further rotation brings key bit portions 109 into abutment with pick-up step 75 of the detainers so that some of the detainers rotate with respect to the remainder. Continued rotation of the key produces contact with pick-up steps 76, 77 and 78 until the notches 82 in the detainers are aligned and the surface 58, Fig. 5a, abuts the adjacent talon guide 43 so that the notch 59 in the members 49, 50 and the notches 82 in the detainers are aligned with the talon 92; plug 32 is driven about its axis by abutment of the surface 58 and the adjacent guide 43 when the surface 94 of the talon reacts against the cam surfaces 29 to urge the talon inwardly into the notches 82 of the detainers. The plug 32 is rotated via the guides 43 so that the connecting bar is rotated to operate the lock to the unlocked position wherein the pin 62 contacts the abutment 103, Fig. 3. Since plates 96, 97 remain stationary it is necessary to turn the key to its datum position to withdraw the key or to release the key whereby the surfaces 56 of members 49, 50 abut the adjacent guide 43 and drive the guide and plug to the datum location thereof; as the guide surfaces 47 of the guides approach the recess 26 the cam surfaces 60 of the members 49, 50 act on the talon 92 to urge the talon outwardly, the influence of the spring 102 causing the surfaces 93, 27 of the talon and recess, respectively, to abut and the pin 62 to abut the extremity of the slot 100. The notches 82 in the detainers are freed to be dispersed and lost motion occurs between the detainers until the edges 83 thereof are contacted by edge 200 of the bridge 51 each detainer reaching its datum position wherein the shoulders 79 abut the surface 46 of the guide 43. Dummy notches may be formed in the edges 80 of the detainers to provide additional security against picking of the lock and one or more of which is or are engaged by the talon. In modifications, (a) the guides 43 are secured to and form part of the carrier 48 and the talon is rotated therewith, the recess 26 extending over substantially 90 degrees of arc, (b) the spring plates 96, 97 employ a toggle spring having a hemi-spherical element (117), Fig. 10 (not shown) adapted swing about an arcuate portion (118) of the spring recess (100) (c) the carrier 48 is arranged so that there is a lost motion between the carrier and the key until the notches 82 of the detainers are aligned, Fig. 11 to 15 (not shown), (d) each detainer is spring-loaded to its datum position, Fig. 16 to 19 (not shown) and to render the lock substantially pick-proof.
