Abstract

1366979 Cam follower adjusters JOHNSON PRODUCTS Inc 14 Dec 1972 [24 Feb 1972] 57831/72 Heading F2K A normally adjustable screw-threaded backlash adjuster 16 for an overhead cam-shaft I.C. engine valve operating mechanism of the type in which a rocker arm 8 has one end 14 pivotally mounted at 34 on a pillar 30 extending from the adjuster 16, the other end engaging a valve stem 2, and a portion of its upper surface intermediate its ends engaging a cam 10, comprises an internally screwed body 26, seated in a cylindrical cavity 22 in the cylinder head 20, the pillar 30 being adjustably screwed in the body 26 and either the pillar 30 or body 26 having a self-locking thread to maintain the adjuster in any required setting. Adjustment may be readily effected by spanner hexagon flats 36 on the pillar 30, the body 26 being formed with flats 38 whereby adjacent pairs of bodies 26 may be locked against rotation by common retainer plates 42 having U-shaped ends engaging the flats 38. A similar modified locking arrangement is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). The mechanical back-lash adjuster is adapted for the direct replacement of a conventional hydraulic pillar type backlash adjuster for increased engine performance, the cylindrical cavity 22, in which the body 26 is seated, normally accommodating an hydraulic back-lash adjuster.
