Abstract

1366948 All-metal oxidation catalyst UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 21 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59287/71 Heading C7B A nickel-free, all-metal, oxidation catalyst comprises an Al-Cr-Fe alloy base coated with at least one Group VIII noble metal (such as Pt, Pd, Pt-Pd or any of these combined with Ru or Ir). The coating may have been applied by electro-plating or by immersion plating. The catalyst may be used in the incineration of fumes from ovens for drying or baking enamels or varnishes. It may be in the form of a screen, wire, ribbon or mat. The alloy of the base may contain 3-5%Al, 12-25%Cr, and the balance Fe except for impurities (such as Co, Si and Mn) up to 1% in total. To make the catalyst, the base may be cleaned with a detergent, etched with HCl with or without FeCl 3 , electro-plated using a solution of platinic chloride in HCl and a carbon anode, and activated by heating to 482-538‹ C in hot combustion gases from a burner in the presence of naphtha or hexane vapours. The plating solution may be circulated through a cation exchange resin bed to remove cation impurities dissolved from the base.
