Abstract

1366505 Nuclear fuel NUKEM NUKLEARCHEMIE UND-METALLURGIE GmbH 21 July 1971 [23 July 1970] 34179/71 Heading G6C Nuclear fuel particles comprise a fuel material coated with one or more layers of pyrolytic carbon, the layer or layers being substantially free from gradients in their physical properties. Particles of uranium or thorium carbide or oxide are fluidized by means of argon or helium and coated by the addition of methane, propylene, or acetylene to the carrier gas. In order to produce the uniform coatings (a) the ratio of the amount of gas to the total surface area of the particles is kept constant as the particles grow in size by drawing off particles from the bed or by increasing the rate of gas input; and (b) the growth rate of the carbon layer is kept constant (i) by confining the coating process to a pipe in the centre of the coating vessel where the quantity of particles and the concentration of the coating gas are constant throughout the coating space; or (ii) by providing gas inlets in the conical base of the coating vessel in addition to the central nozzle or nozzles. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 878,927.
