1366424 Two-part couplings ELCO CORP 7 June 1972 [7 June 1971] 26495/72 Heading H2E Contacts suitable for mating with male contacts are arranged at different distances from the mating face of a connector part to permit them to be mounted closer together than if they were mounted at the same distance from the mating face. Bent wire contacts 28, Fig. 1, are located at different levels in a connector body formed of two layers 18, 20 having contact receiving cavities 32 and a top layer having entry apertures 34 for mating pins 30. The connector body and pins may be respectively located on mother and daughter printed circuit boards. Alternatively, pins 26 may emerge from the side of the body for mounting on a daughter board. The contacts may be mounted with pins 26 in one line and the other end of the wire contact emerging from the side of the body to be engaged by a sliding apertured plate which serves to reduce or eliminate the force required to insert pins 30. The layers 18, 20 may be formed with abutments which stress the contacts 28 to provide reliable positioning relative to the pins 30. Other forms of contact, produced by stamping, machining, sintering or casting, may be in the form of a tuning fork or of closed circular or rectangular form. When the contacts are rigid, they must co-operate with flexible male contacts. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the contacts 122 are in the form of bent wires which overlap when viewed both in the insertion direction and in a direction perpendicular thereto.
