Abstract
136,593. Hadfield, Sir R. A. Nov. 14, 1918. Spades and shovels. - A spade, shovel, or like handoperated digging-implement is made of manganese steel. In the manufacture of a shovel, a blank a of manganese steel is cast, forged, or cut from a plate into the shape shown in Fig. 1, a projection a<1> being formed at one end for making the socket. The projection is split into two tongues a<2>, as shown in Fig. 2, and the blank is forged or rolled at a temperature of about 1050 to 1080‹ C. into the desired thickness. It is then quickly heated to about 700-750‹ C. and allowed to cool to reduce hardness, after which it is cut and pressed to shape and its tongues bent to form the socket. The blade thus formed is heated to about 950-1050‹ C. for a few minutes, and is then quenched in water to toughen it. In a modification, the shovel blade is formed from a sheet of manganese steel made as described in Specification 133,131, [Class 83 (iv), Metals, Working], the sheet, after being annealed, being cut to shape to form the blank with its socket, which is then pressed to the desired dished shape and heated to a high temperature and quenched in water. The blank, before being cut to shape, may also be heated for a few minutes and water-toughened as described.
