1365713 Sewing apparatus TAKATORI MACHINERY WORKS Ltd 10 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 52108/71 Heading D1G [Also in Division A3] Special machines (Fig. 1C) Panty hose are made by positioning hip length stockings 1, 2 as shown, clamping them together along lines 3, 4, cutting the clamped inside surfaces of the stockings between the lines 3, 4, rotating the clamps to present the cut edges outwards, stitching along the lines 3a 3b to join the stockings to form the panty hose and removing the completed article. Feed by clamps (Figs. 3, 4B) The apparatus provided comprises a carrier 7 moved along a circular pathway by a motor 10 and gearing 9, 8. Mounted on the carriage are a number of clamping units each comprising two sets of clamps, e.g. 25a, 25b, each set being carried on a respective arm 18, 17 connected to rotate from the position shown at stations B and F to the position shown at C, &c, when gearing 15, 16, 23a, 23b, 24, 24a is engaged by stationary racks 26a 26b &c as the carrier 7 moves along its tracks. Each pair of clamps is urged open by a spring (68a, Fig. 10A not shown) and selectively closed by an electromagnet (62a) to grip the stockings when required. A pair of stockings are loaded on the clamp units at A, the carrier moves to station B where a pneumatically operated cutter 27 cuts the stockings between the clamp lines, to station C where racks 26a &c swing the arms 17, 18 apart to present the cut portion in a substantially straight line to be sewn, at station D, by the sewing machine 29a. At station F, after the arms have swung together again and the clamps released, a solenoid operated clamp (47, 48 Fig. 9A not shown) grips the legs of the panty hose, which extend over a plate 46 and a pneumatic cam (50) moves the clamp outwards to remove the completed article from the clamp assembly. On approaching station A a stationary cam 31 engages a follower 30 on the clamp assembly to swing the latter through 45‹ to present the clamps at a suitable angle for loading the next pair of stockings. Cutting work The knife 28 is extended by a pneumatic cylinder 27 pivoted at the centre of the machine so as to move with the clamp assembly while being extended to cut the work. To this end a lever (40, Fig. 8B not shown) mounted on the pivoted cutter assembly is rocked by a solenoid, as the clamp assembly reaches station B, to engage a stop of the clamp assembly and cause the cutter assembly to move round with the former. After severing the knife is withdrawn and the solenoid deenergised to allow the cutter assembly to be returned by spring 43b against the action of damper 44. Use of Air In addition to the pneumatic operation of cutter and unloader a suction nozzle 29b is located just upstream of the sewing machine 29a to tension the cut edge during the sewing. In a further embodiment (Fig. 11 not shown) the two clamps are interconnected by links and are reciprocated along a linear path (76) by a chain (74) the clamps are swung apart, when required, by arms (82, 84) having rollers (86, 87) engaging a cam track (88).
