Abstract

1365656 Lifting devices FINNLINES Ltd OY 15 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7480/73 Heading B8H A roll 14 having a centre hole 13 is raised by means of a centre hoisting device comprising a liquid containing cylinder 6 in which a piston 9 is movable by means of a piston-rod 2 having a loop 10 for engagement with a hoist (not shown), the cylinder 6 having openings 5 which communicate with the space formed between the cylinder 6 and an outer resilient wall 1, such that in use, when the device is inserted into the centre hole 13 the device is initially held down and the piston-rod 2 and piston 9 are raised, thus forcing the liquid in the cylinder 6 through the openings 5 to increase the volume of the said space thus forcing the resilient wall 1 into frictional engagement with the surface of the centre hole 13. Hoisting can then take place, and at the end of the hoisting operation a return spring 3 urges the piston 9 back to its original position. A collar 7 prevents the piston 9 from blocking the openings 5 when the piston 9 is in its uppermost position.
