Abstract
1365639 Olefin-unsaturated acid anhydride copolymers KURARAY CO Ltd 6 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 31788/72 Heading C3P Olefin-unsaturated acid anhydride copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers, in a solvent which dissolves the reactant monomers but does not dissolve the copolymer product, in the presence of a free radical initiator and a molecular weight modifier selected from (1) Group I to IV metal salts, hydroxides and oxides and (2) compounds having amine or ammonium groups. The olefin may be propene, butene-1, butene-2, isobutane, pentene-2, hexene-1 or mixtures thereof. The anhydride may be itaconic or maleic anhydride. The initiator may be a peroxide or azo compound. The solvents may be acetic acid esters and mixtures thereof with butanol, cyclohexane, n-hexane, benzene or dioxane, Many suitable modifiers are specified and examples describe the copolymerization of maleic anhydride with isobutene in the presence of (1, 6, 8 and 9) calcium chloride; (2) magnesium chloride; (3 and 7) urea; (4) sodium hydroxide, sulphate, nitrate, nitrite, carbonate, bicarbonate, bisulphite, phosphate, bromide, fluoride, silicate, borate, chlorate, formate, acetate oxalate or maleate, potassium hydroxide, chloride, nitrate, bromide, carbonate, phosphate or acetate, calcium hydroxide or nitrate, aluminium hydroxide, chloride, oxide or basic acetate, copper sulphate, nitrate or chloride, stannous chloride, zinc acetate, ammonium chloride, ammonium acetate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, ethylamine, isopropylamine, diethylamine, triethylamine, acetamide or phenylamine; (5) calcium chloride or potassium nitrate; (10) calcium chloride and magnesium chloride and (13 and 15) zinc chloride; and the copolymerization of maleic anhydride with mixtures comprising isobutene, butene-1 and butene-2 in the presence of (11) urea, (12) calcium chloride and (14) zinc chloride.
