1364798 Speedometers HAWTHORN LESLIE (ENGS) Ltd 14 March 1973 [18 May 1972] 23451/72 Heading G1K Rotary speed-sensitive apparatus comprises an annular cylinder F formed on an input shaft A, and an annular piston C axially slidable on the shaft and co-operating with the shaft and the cylinder to contain a plurality of small spheres B, e.g. 1mm metal spheres, centrifugal action on the spheres causing axial displacement of the piston C against a return spring D or, if the shaft A is vertical, against the gravitational force on the piston. The piston C may be mechanically connected to a speed indicator or alarm device, or may control the engagement or disengagement of a clutch.
