Abstract

1364610 Ethylene dichloride STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 26 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49478/72 Heading C2C Ethylene values are recovered from oxychlorination off-gas from a process for oxychlorinating ethylene to ethylene dichloride in which ethylene, hydrogen chloride and an oxygen-containing gas are reacted in the presence of an oxychlorination catalyst, by drying the ethylene oxychlorination off-gas at a pressure of from 1 to 20 atmospheres by cooling to a temperature of from 5‹ to - 35‹ C. to form a liquid phase, separating the liquid phase from the off-gas and/or contacting the off-gas with a dessicant material, passing the dried gas to a contactor-reactor zone wherein the ethylene is reacted with chlorine at a temperature of from 35‹ to 85‹ C. in the presence of a non-reactive liquid solvent for ethylene dichloride, preferably ethylene dichloride itself, and recovering ethylene dichloride.
