Abstract
1364367 Epoxidation process SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 5 July 1973 [7 July 1972] 31963/72 Heading C2C Oxirane compounds are prepared by reacting an ethylenically unsaturated compound with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of one or more transition metal compounds as catalyst and of one or more chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms and 3-5 chlorine atoms in the molecule as solvent. Suitable solvents are for example those of formula HC(Cl) 2 .C(Cl) 2 R in which R is H or Cl and the corresponding ethylenic compounds derived therefrom by dehydrochlorination. The catalyst may be soluble in the reaction medium, e.g. naphthenates, carbonyls and acetyl acetylacetonates of molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, zirconium and vanadium, or an insoluble salt, e.g. TiCl 4 , deposited on a support, e.g. Bilica. Suitable unsaturated compounds for use as starting materials are, for example, propene, butenes, 1-octene, 1-hexadecene, 1,3-butadiene, cyclohexene, cyclododecene, 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene, styrene, methylstyrene, allyl chloride, allyl alcohol, methallyl alcohol, crotyl alcohol and methyl oleate.
