Abstract

1364239 Disc brakes; actuators GIRLING Ltd 12 Aug 1971 [21 Aug 1970] 40275/70 Headings F2E and F2F A vehicular disc brake assembly has a pair of identical dish-shaped discs bolted together in back-to-back relationship to define a pair of axially spaced annular braking flanges 3, 4 and diametrically opposed disc brakes 6, 5 each to apply a braking force to a respective flange 3, 4. The disc brake 5 is conveniently as described in Specification 1,193,641 and the disc brake 6 comprises two pressure-plates 14, 15, two friction pad assemblies 11, 12 and a pair of fluid pressure actuators 16, each of which actuators 16 comprises a piston 24 movable in a housing 18 so that when the actuator 16 is pressurized the housing 18 acts directly on the pressure-plate 15 to move the assembly 12 into engagement with one face of the flange 3 and the piston 24 moves the other pressure-plate 15 via the intermediary of a draw-bar 17 to thereby move the assembly 11 into engagement with the other face of flange 3. As shown in Figs. 1-4 the actuator 16 is hydraulically actuated and the piston 24 has a central boss 25 which receives an enlarged portion 23 of the draw-bar 17 which enlarged portion 23 abuts a shoulder 29 between a bore 26 and counterbore 27. A screw-threaded portion 28 of the draw-bar 17 has threaded thereon a nut 39 and a lock-nut 40 beyond the end of the boss 25. A slot 41 is formed in the portion 28 for insertion of a tool when it is desired to unscrew nuts 39, 40 to dismantle the arrangement and remove piston 24. A seal 32 in the housing 18 and a seal 42 in the piston 24 form seals with the enlarged portion 23 of the draw bar 17. A seal 33 in housing 18 seals piston 24 and a seal 30 in an extension 19 of housing 18 forms a seal with the draw-bar 17 outwardly of the enlarged portion 23. The draw bar 17 extends through aligned openings in pressure-plates 14, 15 and also through a drag-taking member 7 and the draw bar 17 receives a nut 34 and a lock nut 35 which co-operate with a pair of thrust washers 36 to hold the draw bar 17 and the housing 18 in position. The inner washer 36 is keyed to pressure plate 14 by a spigot 37 and the housing 18 is keyed to the pressure plate 15 by a spigot 20. The drag-taking member 7 is carried from a support 9 secured to a stationary part adjacent to the flange 4 by means of an axial extension 10. In a further embodiment the hydraulic actuators are supported on a planar actuator support member, which member is floatingly mounted with the interposition of respective 0-rings on a pair of pins fixed to the support 9. In a modification each hydraulic actuator 16 is supported by a separate support member. In a further modification the pins are provided on the support member, with holes in the support 9. In a yet further modification the hydraulic actuators are slidingly supported on a fixed actuator support member. (For Figures see next page.)
