Abstract

1364229 Prep. of m and p-phenylenediamine AKZO NV 30 March 1973 [1 April 1972] 15437/73 Heading C2C m and p-Phenylenediamine is prepared by a process which comprises subjecting isophthalic acid diamide or terephthalic acid diamide to Hofmann degradation. The first stage of the degradation in the formation of N-haloamide is preferably carried out at 0 to 30‹ C. Suitable hypohalites for the process are the hypohalites and hypobromites of sodium, potassium, calcium and barium. Advantageously there are employed aqueous suspensions containing 3 to 10% by weight of the diamide for the preparation of m-phenylene diamine and aqueous suspensions containing 3 to 5% by weight of the diamide for the preparation of p-phenylenediamine. The ratios of equivalents of hypohalite to moles of diamide is advantageously between 2 : 1 and 2À7:1 and for the equivalents of hydroxide to moles of diamide is advantageously between 8 : 1 and 10 : 1.
