Abstract

1364204 Fibrous carbon ion exchange material KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 2 Feb 1972 [4 Fob 1971] 4883/72 Heading C1A A fibrous carbon able to act as a cation exchange material, with a total exchange capacity of more than 1 milli equivalent per gram and having a specific electrical resistance of from 10-1 to 10<-4> ohm cm. is obtained by treating carbon fibre with a solution consisting of 2-96% by weight of nitric acid, from 2 to 45% by weight of potassium bichromate and from 2 to 80% by weight of water, the solution during the treatment being at a temperature up to its boiling point and the treatment lasting for a period of time of from 5 mins. to 10 hours. The amount of solution used ranges from 20 to 150 times the weight of the carbon fibre used.
