Abstract

1364138 Golf balls ACUSHNET CO 8 Sept 1972 [17 Jan 1972] 41681/72 Headings C3G and C3P [Also in Division A6] Golf balls are formed from a composition comprising (1) polybutadiene having at least 40% cis-1,4 structure, (2) a mono-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, stated to be graft polymerized to the polybutadiene, and (3) metal ions. Suitable acids include acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic and maleic acids. The metal ions may be added as oxides, e.g. MgO, ZnO or mixtures thereof, or as the salt form of the acid, e.g. sodium methacrylate. The compositions preferably contain a free radical initiator, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, and may also contain silica as filler, titanium dioxide as whitening agent, and an anti-oxidant, e.g. 2,21- methylene bis-(4-methyl-6-tert-butyl phenol). The golf balls may be of unitary type, or of the core/cover type.
