Abstract

1363563 Electroconductive paper S C M CORP 21 Jan 1972 3078/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and G2] An electroconductive paper base sheet comprises a cellulosic web coated with a binder and a conductive agent which agent comprises at least 20 wt. % montomorillonite clay, for example Fuller's earth or Bentonite. A dielectric top coating may be applied to the conductive sheet for making use thereof in electrostatic copying. The binder is a filmforming resinous-binder, preferably a coalesced residue of an aqueous latex. Many diverse, natural and synthetic binder resins are listed, those preferred in the Examples being butadiene-styrene latexes. Fillers and pigments such as Kaolin, TiO 2 , CaCO 5 and BaSO 4 may be present together with latex stabilisers, if needed. A slurry or dispersion of the clay, is added to the resin solution or latex before application of the resulting compositions by spraying, roller coating, dipping or doctor blade to the cellulosic web. Alternatively a sheet of polyethylene containing dispersed clay may be laminated to the cellulosic web. The top coating comprises an insulating resin and, dispersed therein, a divided photoconductor. The insulating resin may be a silicone, polyvinyl acetate or, preferably, film-forming acrylic resin which contains sufficient carboxylic functionality to render it dispersable in water by neutralisation with a fugitive base. The acrylic resin may be a copolymer of an acrylic monomer with another monomer. Many examples of such copolymers are listed. The dispersed photoconductor may be the oxides of aluminuim, antimony, bismuth, cadmium, lead, mercury, molybdenum or the iodides, selenides, sulphides or tellurides of these metals, sulphur, anthracene selenium, polyvinyl carbazole, or preferably zinc oxide. Aluminium oxide may be present in addition to zinc oxide, and dyes such as Bromophenol Blue, Rose Bengal or Fluroscein may also be present.
