Abstract

1363536 Composite metal sheeting W A WOOTTEN 2 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971 21 Oct 1971] 36107/72 Heading E1K [Also in Divisions B3 B5 and F2] A composite product comprises two metal panels 1 and 2 disposed in spaced relation to each other, each of said panels having a plurality of cuts therein defining tabs 3 and 4 which are bent relative to said panel to extend toward the other of said panels across substantially the entire space between the panels, pairs of tabs extending respectively from said panels being disposed in substantially overlapping relation to one another, the overlapping tabs being attached to one another to form intermediary members that retain the panels in fixed position relative to one another. The product may be made by a method comprising the steps of making cuts in each panel to form a plurality of tab areas therein, each cut leaving an uncut portion in the panel which is adapted to act as a hinge line for the tab area, the cuts providing like patterns of cuts in each panel, positioning the panels in spaced facing relation to one another with the like patterns of the tab areas in substantially opposing relation, bending the tab areas in each panel about their respective hinge lines to form a plurality of tabs. which extend into the space between the panels, each tab extending from one of the panels being disposed in facing, closely adjacent, substantially completely overlapping relation to a corresponding tab extending from the other panel, and fastening each tab extending from one of the panels to the corresponding tab extending from the other panel. The tabs may be connected to one another by an adhesive 6, by mechanical joining or by welding. The panels may be provided with tabs of graduated sizes to provide a spacing difference between the panels or to accommodate a contouring of one or both panels with respect to each other or to the centre line of the product. The tabs in one of the panels may be spaced from one another by a spacing which differs from that between the tabs in the other of the panels to retain the panels in a cylindrical configuration e.g. to form a cylindrical product. The outer surface of a or each panel may be covered by an imperforate overlay panel 5, 8. In a preferred embodiment, an overlay panel provided with larger tabs than those of the two panels is used, the larger tabs extending from this overlay panel being forced into the openings of the two panels in such a way that each tab from the overlay panel forms a contoured strut completely bridging the space between the original panels. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8, a closed cut 14 is made in the centre of each open cut 12 of the first panel 10, a smaller open cut 15 being made in the centre of each open cut 13 of the second panel 11, the tabs formed from the open cuts 15 being mechanically engaged in the corresponding closed cuts 14.
